Interview with Richard Farrell on the "Industry Buster" Promotion

HairSite: Why do you call this “The Industry Buster?”

Richard: Well, most people know my views of the Industry as it exists today. For years I’d tried to work with this industry, trying to challenge them to offer their clients something better than the goofy systems they’re letting their clients walk out of their salons with now. But it was a waste of time, ultimately. Nobody stepped up to meet my Farrell Challenge. That pretty much proved to me that continuing on my own path is the only way to successfully help hair loss sufferers. So far, the success of Farrell Hair Replacement has come about by staying out of the industry's eye and being on the side of the consumer instead.

HairSite: You've always been described as “in your face” when it comes to your relationship with the rest of the industry but now it sounds like you’re declaring war!

Richard: It is war and the “factory-reliant” companies selling their junk hair pieces are my main targets.

HairSite: Which companies are you talking about?

Richard: You know which companies they are! They’re all the big ones: New Image, United Hair Lines and On-Rite to name a few. So with this promotion we will meet or beat any of the discount chain’s prices. I can provide a very high quality Farrell system to these discount clients, the “Custom-Hybrid.” It’s not the same as my ultra-custom line but its damn close. And you know all of those maintenance contracts that clients hate to be obligated to? We are going to free the clients of other companies of their contracts. We will get them into Farrell systems on a case by case basis until those contracts are a thing of the past.

HairSite: How has the response been so far?

Richard: We have over 200 new hybrids in production as of today. You know, I’m ramped up in Mexico and can handle any amount of volume and since I’m not interested in huge profits from these hair systems, I can easily play this wild card. We are the best in the world, but we have the image of being the most expensive, which isn’t correct. In the end, we can compete and win on every level.

HairSite: What are the main differences between a “hybrid” and your “ultra-custom” line?

Richard: Well, the hybrid system has many elements of the ultra-custom systems. And in many ways, the hybrid is more “custom” because it’s made differently in each case in order to help the client exit out of his or her maintenance contract and into our Farrell system’s. For one thing, the hair is “Euro-Like”, not European like our Ulta-Custom systems. And the knotting on these systems are more standardized. Fine tuning is limited and there are fewer base material options. Our Hybrids are still better than anything those chains have to offer because many of our “ultra-custom” techniques are incorporated into the production of these systems including our undetectable front.

HairSite: So, can anybody order the Custom Hybrid or do you have to be a discount chain client with a contract?

Richard: They Hybrids aren’t available on a regular basis or price structure. Each new client will be entitled to one Hybrid system and in some cases, a pair. A second Hybrid or set of Hybrids may not be ordered.

HairSite: Why is that?

Richard: You have to understand, it isn’t Farrell’s intention to produce a lower-priced line of custom systems. The Hybrids are merely an affordable gateway into the world of Ultra Custom. When the Hybrid system reaches the end of its life span, then only the Ultra Custom systems can be ordered. We don’t offer a pair of systems under the term of this promotion and yet want the new client to have two similar systems. So, if possible, we will rework the system that they’re wearing from the other company as a switch system.

HairSite: And what about Farrell? You don’t have contracts?

Richard: That’s right. At any of our Farrell locations across the country, you only pay for services you need. And that’s another way we are freeing our clients and new clients from other chains; we help the client become more independent by teaching them attachment methods and switching techniques. You know what? If you read the Farrell forums on HairSite, you’ll notice something amazing: The secret is finally out. Hair Club for Men clients have figured out the truth about costs because they’re doing the math. Even with my Ultra Custom line of systems, Farrell is less expensive.
